moon circles
a poem that captures my community of women on the full moon
Full Moon Circles
I haven’t been in the practice for a bit, but I love to host moon circles in my backyard on the full moon. I invited my girlfriends, mom friends, neighborhood friends etc. I would share a bit about the astrological goings on of that moon, invited the women to open about some aspect of their lives that related to that moon, and then always planned a ritual - things like pressing our mother’s day flowers into art, burning our worries, drawing prompts, so on.
I knew when writing The Forty Poems that I wanted to have a poem that represented my gratitude to the women who showed up at those circles with me. A special shout-out to my girl Elisse who attended every single one. That’s the type of woman we all need in our corner :)
our ancestors craved the chance
to be where we are today
a circle of women
gathering around a glowing hearth
not burning in one
not being accused of witchcraft
not afraid to look one another in the eyes
to see the blue flame and reach right in
to gaze into the heavy and hopeful moon
surrounded by blazes we lit ourselves
bound together by a choice
linked like a stack of logs
one
resting
on top and higher
of the other higher
each working to stoke the fire

Lovely. Simple, rhythmic and atmospheric.
Gravitas.
Can’t wait for the next one… 🌕 💕
